Covid-19 in Wales: What do the stats tell us?

What can different statistics tell us about coronavirus in Wales so far?

We seem to be bombarded with different measures, but what do they mean and how does Wales compare with other parts of the UK?

Here, we try to answer some of the questions and explain what the different measures are and also give some of the most recent figures.

Where in Wales are the most cases?

The south Wales valleys are currently dominating for highest case rates but they appear to be easing or levelling out over recent days.

Merthyr Tydfil hit a peak of 769 cases per 100,000 people at the end of October, by far the highest rate in Wales, and was the hardest-hit area in the UK.

But there has been an improvement in recent days and the rate has dropped to 497. The most recent comparable data saw it outside the worst 10 areas in the UK.

There have been 300 actual cases over the past seven days and a rise in the positivity rate (22.2%) has also eased.

Gurnos and Cefn Coed-y-Cymmer have the highest local case rates in the area but they are falling.

Along with Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT), Merthyr is one of only two local areas in Wales now above the 20% positivity rate, while the Welsh average has fallen to below 15%.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended the positivity proportion of tests should be no more than 5% before areas come out of restrictions.
