What is ADSL2+?
ADSL2+ extends the capability of basic ADSL by doubling the number of downstream bits. The data rates can be as high as 24 Mbit/s downstream and 1 Mbit/s upstream depending on the distance from the DSLAM to the customer's home.

ADSL2+ is capable of doubling the frequency band of typical ADSL connections from 1.1 MHz to 2.2 MHz. This doubles the downstream data rates of the previous ADSL2 standard of up to 12 Mbit/s, but like the previous standards will degrade from its peak bitrate after a certain distance.

Also ADSL2+ allows port bonding. This is where multiple ports are physically provisioned to the end user and the total bandwidth is equal to the sum of all provisioned ports. So if 2 lines capable of 24 Mbit/s were bonded the end result would be a connection capable of 48 Mbit/s.

How do providers supply ADSL2+?
There are two methods that a provider can use to deliver ADSL2+. Both methods require them to install equipment into your local telephone exchange, the difference between the two is what they do with your phone line.
1. Spectrum Sharing Service (SSS)
Spectrum Sharing Service (SSS) is a service where Telstra provides a Public Service Telephone Service (PSTS) voice band service to an end user, while also providing access to the same line to another carrier or service provider (the access seeker). This access seeker simultaneously provides other services (typically ADSL broadband) over the high frequency portion of the line.
 
2. Unconditioned Local Loop (ULL)
Unconditioned Local Loop (ULL) is a twisted metallic pair from the Network Boundary point (NBP) at your customers premises to a point of interconnection located at a Telstra exchange or remote integrated module known as a customer access module (CAM). This CAM is the point where Telstra delivers dial and ring tone for PSTN services to end users.

What do I need to get ADSL2+?
Two things are needed to get ADSL2+. Your local Telephone Exchange needs to have an ADSL2+ provider active, and you will need a line that is capable of ADSL2+ (SSS or ULL).
Why doesn't my line support ADSL2+?
Your line may not support ADSL2+ for a few reasons. The most common ones are

  • Excessive Transmission Loss (ETL)
  • ETL means that there is too much noise on your phone line to enable ADSL/ADSL2+. Generally this means that you are a long way from your exchange, however it could also be caused by lower quality copper, the number of joints in your phone line, or bridge taps.

  • Incompatible Infrastructure - RIM (Remote Integrated Multiplexer)
  • A RIM, otherwise known as a Remote Integrated Multiplexer, is a device that Telstra uses to provision telephone services in areas where there is no existing copper, or the existing copper in the ground cannot support the demand for services in the area.RIMs are a fairly modern and flexible Pair Gain system designed mainly for urban areas in cities due to their ability to multiplex a large number of lines.

    Alot of newer housing estates have telephone services supplied by a RIM. Large office buildings, shopping centres, apartment complexes and the like are all "prime candidates" to be serviced by RIMs.

    In rural and remote areas, older telephone exchanges can often be replaced by a RIM unit that utilizes the existing fibre infrastructure to communicate to an exchange of a larger community.

    This means that instead of Telstra having to lay hundreds of pairs of copper wires for several kilometres to a housing estate or industrial area, a single pair of optic fibres could carry all the phone calls. Hundreds of pairs of copper were still used in the final few hundred metres of the network to deliver normal analogue lines, but for a much shorter path back to the RIM instead of all the way back to the exchange.

    However what this does mean, is that your line is not directly connected to the telephone exchange where the providers have their ADSL2+ equipment installed (and therefore you are unable to get ADSL2+).
Why doesn't my Exchange support ADSL2+?
There may be a number of reasons that the exchange hasn't been enabled for ADSL2+:

  • Not enough customers on the exchange
  • No way of getting the data back to the city (backhaul)
  • Lack of floor space in the exchange
  • Lack of Main Distribution Frame (MDF) space
Can I change Exchanges?
No. Currently there is no way to chance your phone line to a different exchange. Since the phone lines are designed provide a voice service Telstra don't need to change your line to a different exchange. It would also be very expensive to connect your house to a different copper path to a new exchange.
