Hi...im on the brooklyn (vic) exchange and these are my results from the detailed summary... Line of Sight: 378 m Estimated Cable: 624 m Estimated Attenuation: 9 Estimated Maximum Speed: 23666 My ISP is netspace and i am on ADSL2+ plan. I am finding it really weird that the constant speed I get is a maximum of around 520kb/s. This speed is achieved when downloading from netspace speedtest and its local files. Being so close to the exchange..with a new modem...and a house that is relatively new...i would have expected speeds of at least...1.5MB/s. Does anyone have any idea why im getting such crappy speed? :( |

filofunk writes.. Does anyone have any idea why im getting such crappy speed? :( That is really crappy. There is a few things it could be. Do you have Foxtel Digital? Do you have a monitored alarm? Do you have a long extension cable from the phone point to the modem? |

hi.. nope..no foxtel digital..no monitored alarm..the computer is right next to the modem...its really weird... ive done everything netspace has told me to do = isolation tests, speedtests, modem configuration (eg. vc/llc based configs). and nothing...still getting around 520Kb/s. :( i also got a telstra techie to come out to see if there was anything faults with the telephone line...this was jus last week..and they said there was nothing wrong. my modem is new..i upgraded from a Netgear DM111P to a DG834G (because I thought that might have had something to do with it). I only have one phone in the house which is connected to the filter..but since i did the isolation tests..that should have nothing to do with it. im getting ripped off ey. :( |

What does your modem actually sync at? the old adsl modem that I have is not adsl2 compatible...its a dlink 302G. i am using ehternet to connect computer to modem. These are the results from my modem. Did the Telstra tech check your internal wiring (from the house to your phone point)? No. the telsra tech didnt check internal wiring. i dont think they did...but what ive done in the past is check all phone points to see whether either was faulty. both phone points produced the same outcome. |

filofunk writes.. Line Rate 20894 Kbps 999 Kbps NICE!, what that means is the the line is perfectly fine. You are syncing at 20mbit. It means that if you are getting slow speed (520KB/s isn't slow, but you should be able to go a maximum of 4 times that speed) then it is either the backhaul link from the exchange to the city that is full, from the city to your isp that is full or the server you are downloading from can't send it any faster. Since you are with netspace give this a try for me. Start downloading the file below and see what sort of speed you get (give it atleast 2-3 mins). http://mirror.netspace.net.au/pub/centos/5.1/isos/i386/CentOS-5.1-i386-bin-1of6.iso cheers |

heya adsl2exchanges..! thanks heaps for the advise above. yeah 520KB/s isnt slow.. i mean..im still very happi its faster than being on adsl1 at 1.5Mbit. Anyway...is what your trying to say mean that there are a lot of people on my exchange on adsl2? hmms...onli netspace allows adsl2 on the brooklyn exchange at the moment. i'll have to give the speedtest from the mirror file you provided when i get home tonite :D. i dont mean to be pessimistic but i rkn it's gonna stay at around 500KB/s. will let ya know tonite :D thanks heaps! |

I reckon it will go alot faster. Those speed test website's aren't always a good guide. Remember you can only download as fast as the other server can upload. :) |

netspace mirrors are lame imho, if you want to test your line speed my advise is internode games or Microsoft website as both go insanely fast. I am on 8000/384 plan and i get 871 down from internode and Microsoft website and im only on adsl1, if your are synched at adsl2 speeds, id say its most likely your source aka netspace website. Try downloading a torrent that has say 1000 seeders and see what speed u get at that. I use exactly the same modem as you and its been great to me. |

It could be from your exchange to netspace. The only people that would be able to answer that is the wholesale provider for Netspace (either Powertel or Optus). If you want to pursue it further then contact Netspace, inform them that your line gets great sync speed (20mbit which they should be able to confirm) but you are getting slower downloads from their own server and see what they say. cheers |

But if you really want to find out a bit more about why it is going faster you could ask for a team leader or manager to give you a call back. |

This may be of interest to readers of this thread (or it may not...) I've just recently upgraded from Netspace 1500/250 to Netspace ADSL2+ on the East Kew exchange — estimated distance about 2K. I get d/l speeds up to about 500K depending on where from — the Netspace mirror further up this thread gives me speed varying between 248K and 301K, but if I connect to the actual Netspace site: www.speedtest.netspace.net.au (which has test files up to 2.4GB) I get 650 to just over 700K (that's bytes, not bits) which suggests the Netspace mirror is indeed crappy. I sync at 6096/800 on a Draytek 2600G wireless router (non-ADSL2 and now several years old but VERY reliable.) Also tried an Open 824RLW (a rebadged Billion — forget which one) which IS ADSL2-2+ — it synched a little faster at about 6500 but I found it a right sod to set up, so went back to the Draytek, which at least comes up in the same setting each time it's started and runs a lot cooler. Users upgrading from ADSL to ADSL2+ (on East Kew, at least) probably don't need a faster modem than they already have — almost all ADSL units can achieve 8000, which it appears most Melbourne exchanges can't supply anyway. Incidentally, I tried Unblocka.exe — made no difference whatever. |

Line Prob CAPED a 5/mbs by Telstra if they on the WholeSale dslm ports Bright is CAPED 5/MB for each isp on the Bright Exchange |
